PatiBato! Take Back the School Arc
One of the plotlines present in "PatiBato!", a popular manga currently published in Weekly Shounen Dive. Commonly known as the Take Back the School Arc.
<Summary>
Framboise Academy, where our protagonist—Kashii Shouta—and his friends attend, has been taken over by a genius patissier that appeared out of nowhere—Hinomiya Mao—who then banished all students from the campus.
Complicit in this takeover was our protagonist's friendly rival, Chiyoda Reito. Without giving a reason for this betrayal, Reito disappears—
※※Beware of major spoilers for the "Take Back the School Arc" beyond this point※※
In order to take back the school, Shouta and his friends challenge Hinomiya's team to a Patissier Battle.
Reito, who had disappeared, was ultimately the one holding them from victory, standing against his comrades.
The battle establishes Reito's real motive—and Hinomiya's actual aim.
They both stemmed from distrust in Framboise Academy's education system, which had become so obsessed with the outcome of Patissier Battles that it was beginning to distort, deviating towards the idea that its students need only ever make, eat, and pursue the path of desserts.
Seeing his beloved desserts ruined by the influence of the mad Framboise Academy, Hinomiya came from the future.
And unbeknownst to anyone, Reito had realised that his talents suit pizza more than chocolate, and felt suffocated by the school environment that wouldn't approve of him making anything else.
He agreed and complied with Hinomiya's desire to fix the academy, and left its revival in his hands while he went on a journey to find what he truly wants to make.
Our protagonist, Shouta, with both a love and talent for baked treats who'd never once strayed from his path, engages in a final battle with Reito, who'd kept moving forward despite his hesitation.
As his own solution, Reito doesn't abandon the chocolate he's loved all this time, and even makes use of his newfound talent to present an incredible chocolate pizza.
Uninfluenced by the academy, he learned about paths other than desserts, as well as the vast world outside the academy, and concluded that there must be meaning in choosing the path of a patissier, in making chocolate because it's something he loves—seeing both Reito coming to this conclusion and Shouta pushing forward with genuine affection instead of worrying about the outcome of the battle, Hinomiya felt as though the future was beginning to change…
The Night Sky's Love Call
Director and Screenwriter: Isotake Akuta. Formerly titled "Kirik and Laimin". A story about a young artist named Kirik who happens across and befriends a mysterious lifeform that hatched from a mysterious egg.
Received an honourable mention at the Something-or-Other Film Contest.
Isotake Uruta
A dinosaur shaped clip made by Kiroku. It's split into two colours—light blue and pink—whose favourite dishes are negative and positive emotions respectively, which they eat up together when Akuta wants to jump and run away.
A new friend that Kiroku gifted to Akuta.
The club is called "抜け駆け斬首", with "抜け駆け" referring to making the first move (often, though not exclusively, in a romantic context) and "斬首" referring to beheading. I went with "Distance or Death" because it gets the point across without being clunky, but I will note that I think the tone of the original feels more in line with the whole samurai thing ("抜け駆け" can also refer to sneaking into an enemy camp, and beheading is of course a method of execution), so I may revise my translated name at a later date
